“What a brilliant book! Rule 13: Read this book. It can only help you write better genre stories. What's to lose?" …Vanessa Gebbie, award-wining author and editor of Short Circuit: A Guide to the Art of the Short Story

Do you write genre fiction? Or love reading it? This bestselling book (over 200 weeks on Amazon.com's writing reference books bestsellers Top 20 chart) reveals the 12 rules that writers of science fiction, fantasy, crime and horror must never break when building believable imaginary worlds for their readers.

Can you spot the writers in love with their ‘trappings’ (showing off their research), ever been let down by an author ‘cheating’ or ‘jumping the shark’, are you in danger of losing the (credible) plot? The 12 Rules also covers gadgets vs. characters, plausible villains, unspeakable names, language and more.

If you are writing genre fiction, The 12 Rules keep your readers reading. As a reader, armed with this guide, have some fun spotting any rule transgressions in your next book.

The 12 Rules is only available on Amazon (including Amazon.com if you are in the US) in a Kindle ebook format.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A good read for wannabe writers by Gayle Allsop - 02 June 2021

I always like a book where I am forced to think and write notes to remind me of some part I found interesting. I ran out of paper with this one! Ideas flowed, plot holes in my own story were suddenly filled...... Yes, some bits didn’t apply to my writing, but who cares? You can find ways to twist the advice to fit your own work in progress. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Excellent by Deborah Milling - 06 January 2021

Great info and suggestions for wannabe writers including me! Read this before you start writing. I have written my story but still read this today and plan to use the info to improve my story.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Quick but useful rules by Dannan Tavona - 26 November 2020

Focus on why the readers should care about your story and your world. Keep it consistent. Helpful treatise in fantasy and SF fiction writing. Fast read.

5.0 out of 5 stars - The 12 Rules is a must for ANY Writer! by Geoffrey - 14 October 2020

If you’re just starting out or you’re a season writer, the 12 Rules is a must for any writer that is out there. I highly recommend this book it was a quick read with choice gems. Great bits worth highlighting and things. I’ll be keeping these 12 Rules hand as I write.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Nifty by K.Davis - 7 September 2020

This is a quick reference to the dos and don'ts of genre fiction. There are some good tips here and I wish some of the authors I have read recently had seen this little book. Readers are not stupid. This list of rules will remind writers not to cheat or take the easy way out.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Handy to keep by your side by Bill Hopkins - 22 June 2020

I’ve published six novels and I tried using these rules. To have them annotated and gathered into one place is very helpful. Before I start any genre of work, I’ll re-read this book. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars - Solid Advice for new writers by Joy - 10 May 2020

This book has some great advice for new writers. It’s simple and easy to follow, no jargon with plenty on mainstream examples to get the points across. If you have studied writing at all you may already have heard most of these points but it doesn’t hurt to refresh the mind when it comes to story writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Perfect book for the fiction newbie by Franklin Reid - 22 April 2020

I'm a published author with more than 30 nonfiction books on amazon. In between writing these books I have started several fiction titles but finished none of them. The problem? I don't know what I'm doing!
Nonfiction writing has a basis in published works, ancient and modern, plus the internet with Wikipedia, Google searches, and online Bible commentaries with biblehub.com to check facts. But fiction is all from the imagination!

I quickly learned that I knew nothing about building characters (they are all wooden pegs or cardboard cutouts) and I would write with no thought of a plot, back story or curve. Your book gave me a quick, easily digested set of rules to follow and hopefully, write something worth reading. Thanks for giving this newbie a simple path to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Great story and I enjoyed reading it by Darnell Reid - 9 January 2020

It a great story and I enjoyed reading it. You can write a lot of stories from what you learn from this book. I would love to recommended it to some people. Thanks for writing the book. I hope other people like it like I did. There is never too much books on this subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars -Good Read by Miss HJ Percival - 7 January 2020

A good, concise, no nonsense book offering tried and tested rules of fiction writing. The title was slightly misleading as I assumed this to be a book about only setting, but in actual fact it goes into depth on plot, characterisation, staying authentic to your story and much more. I would definitely recommend this book to the novice and enduring creative writer alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Rules are meant to be broken by CC - 9 December 2019

Thank you for concisely mentioning the rules of fiction. Good stuff to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Refresher by Lashea Secret - 26 November 2019

Some information was new. Most of it was a refresher for me. This is not a problem. It is a good short read.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Good Ideas and Advice... by Donald Hunt, Top Contributor: Writing - 15 July 2019

Rule number one: Never try to fool, or cheat your readers.
Rule number two: Never forget to follow rule number one.
There are good tips and advice all through this short, to the point book. Much of it, you may already know, but many fail to take too heart.
I read and review many books, across a lot of genres and see it all the time.
Always make sure you don't confuse your readers. They will pick up on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Imagine that by Maximus Petronius - 15 May 2019

A very interesting and potentially useful book to anyone with a hankering to be the next Tolkien... Easy to read and re-read when required.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Great Read by Robb Star - 30 April 2019

Simple rules but some gems for sure. Gave me some good things to think about.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Solid Advice by Magen Reed - 5  January 2019

This is all pretty solid advice and it's written in a quick and easy to cover way. A good handbook to think about when you sit at your writing table.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Helpful Tips by Kristen Piephoff - 17 December 2018

This ebook is a helpful quick read that I will be referring back to occasionally. I enjoyed reading the examples provided and the witty commentary. The only thing I would offer as a flaw is the short length and lack of significant "how to." or depth of the process of creation. This is more of a short guide on the "Do's and Don't's" of genre fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Great book; slightly misleading title by Susan Wilson - 7 November 2018

With a title like "creating imaginary worlds" one would expect the book to cover information about planetary or at least worldview creation. There was nothing of that sort to be found. Instead this is a great set of does and don'ts for writing genre fiction. I did find it helpful in knowing what some of the problems that have been hinted at over the last few years have been. The points made are necessary, and well-thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any writer. That said, I do wish they'd change the title to focus more on what the book is about. All in all one of the good books for those who want to improve their craft.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Good read by C Bon - 2 October 2018

A lot of the rules are common sense, well I hope they are, but it gives a good coverage of not only what works but more importantly what doesn't using relatable examples.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Short, pithy and to the point by E. Bråten on 15 September 2018

I read this in one sitting. It hit the main points of how to keep internal consistency in your fictional world. It doesn't go into great depth, but that's not what I was after. It's a handy little reference while outlining my plot and characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Good Read by Kindle Customer - 23 August 2018

Some of the rules could probably have been condensed, but that is simply formatting. A good book to read while plotting a story for the first time. Wish I'd had it!

These are some international reviews that slipped under wire...

5.0 out of 5 stars - Just what I needed by Estrelas (Brazil) - 21 April 2018

This is all I needed and expected, if you're looking for some ideas and information on how to make a good book, this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Reasonable set of rules for fiction writers by Vladimir Drkulec (Canada) - 21 January 2018

A quick read and a reasonable set of guidelines for any fictional universe. I found it useful and interesting. Now it's time to put some ideas to paper even if that paper is actually a computer screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Great checklist and reference book (Australia) - 14 January 2017

A great, quick checklist for what to keep in mind when creating your fictional worlds. It is not genre specific, and the examples illustrate how the 12 Rules have been used successfully in various popular texts.

While not a 'How To Build a World in Detail' book, it is a good troubleshooter so you can make sure the work you invest gets good returns. The tips on how world building and delivery method can impact reader engagement are very helpful.

Well worth reading, even if not writing in the speculative fiction genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Worth grabbing by Mike (Australia) - 23 June 2016

That's 10 cents per rule. Bargain! You can't find advice that cheap elsewhere, unless one of your parents or friends is an actual writer and are willing to part with decent advice for free.

If you're expecting a how-to guide, look elsewhere. But for some good tips this is quite good for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Simple and effective
by Hayley Fox (Australia) - 7 December 2017

This book didn't get mired down in the guff so often find in "how to" books. Simple and to the point, while providing examples for clarity, I found the author engaging and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Fun and informative by Megan Garrison - 19 March 2018

Super interesting and fun to read - also quickly made the points new writers or people interested in writing need to keep in mind. Glad I read it

5.0 out of 5 stars - Five Stars
by Clesio Ismerio de Oliveira - 11 March 2018

Very interesting book!

4.0 out of 5 stars - Friendly advice as opposed to an educational text by Susan Swank - 27 January 2018

As a fan fiction writer I am always trying to offer my readers a more polished and professional finished piece but every single book on the subject of writing is the same. There are numerous chapters telling you what you must of must not do before the final chapter says there are no rules.

This is no different but if you learn better with a less formal approach, this is a good piece that focuses on honing your creative processes instead of getting into the rigid mechanics of writing itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Good overview
by Liz - 24 January 2018

Gives a good overview. He points out things that can be easy to overlook.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Very concise and useful! by SoRol - 19 February 2018

I found this book very concise and useful so I'll try and emulate that here as well. It is very well written - in that is very easy to read and it makes sense. The advice given is good and sound; almost like stating the obvious! But the obvious is so often only easily recognized in retrospect - Rear view mirrors and all that.
I intend to keep it and to use it as an easy checklist reference.
Good job! SoRoL

5.0 out of 5 stars - Funny, sarcastic, and on point by Shells - 2 January 2018

As a writer I am always looking for ways to improve the craft. Normally, craft books are dry, boring lectures that do more to piss me off than to inspire my writing. This book is different. In a nutshell, this book is great advice wrapped in funny sarcasm, tied with helpful insights. I experienced many “Yeah, I do that” moments and also “Oh no! I do that” moments. A quick read. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Very informational by Kindle Customer - 28 December 2017

A very nice summary of topics at a great price, I'll be coming back to this one once or twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars - 12 solid rules by M.Speers - 10 December 2017

The title drew me in as the writing process for me has been ever expansive, I need to reel in my story with a solid checklist. This is that list!

4.0 out of 5 stars - Great Read very informative by Clayton Thomas - 30 November 2017

Really interesting read, as an aspiring novelist I found the rules for genre fiction to be very useful. Also, charmingly written with many an example putting a smile on my face. Thanks you very much Mr Christian. A beautiful bounty.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Quick easy read by clare - 25 November 2017

Flows nicely. Straight to the point. Confirms suspicions of why some books are un-put-downable and others are not. Will be reading more books from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Great reminder of what we already know by Lynn Brown - 16 November 2017

Christian has written a book that reminds us all of the rules we already know. Good to be reminded of those rules!

4.0 out of 5 stars - Obvious but quite often necessary by Amazon Customer - 10 August 2017

Christian has written a very handy guide to some key rules of genre fiction. Some may seem obvious some may have slipped your mind. It's also a quick but engaging text that isn't laborious to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Very Helpful by Robert Hargrove - 1 August 2017

A very helpful guide for beginners just trying to learn the craft of writing. I especially like the last rule.

4.0 out of 5 stars - It's a great foundation to build on by L. Keeping - 29 July 2017

Considering it hardly costs anything, it would be crazy not to buy this. These are some short and simple ideas that could be extremely helpful for anyone starting out in fiction writing. It really only touches on the basics, but it's a great foundation to build on. Apart from this, the best thing to read I'd say is quite obvious: books from the genre you're intending to write in.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Very valuable book by M. M. Walcott - 29 June 2017

If you are a writer, this book may keep you on track within your genre and not write something full of logic errors and other type of mistakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars - I didn't realise I needed this book
by Amazon Customer - 17 June 2017

The author manages to convey his obviously well researched ideas in a witty and succinct way that was easily digestible. It's definitely essential knowledge for anyone writing or planning to write fantasy or sci fi! I was definitely guilty of breaking at least one of his rules and it's made a positive difference to my writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Five Stars by Penragon - 6 June 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars - Great tips by L Marie Adams, author Landy Masen Publishing - June 4 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars - A Very Useful Book by Margie - 18 May 2017

Seriously though, as an aspiring author I have found the book very useful. I like the bullet points at the end of each chapter and have rigorously highlighted same.
Now to work....

5.0 out of 5 stars - Five Stars by Greg G. Lusienski - 20 April 2017

Some good rules on building world.

5.0 out of 5 stars - An Essential Guide For New SF/Fantasy Authors - by Alan B - 15 April 2017

This is a helpful guide for anyone who has ever thought of starting their first novel. Charles Christian provides straight forward advice on the basic rules of plot, structure and dialogue with examples from existing books of how they are applied and when it is OK to bend them. Although it is aimed mainly at SF/Fantasy authors, writers from other genres will still benefit from reading this guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Practical and humorous by Renee Phillips - 31 March 2017

I enjoyed reading this book and found it a helpful reminder to keep on task as a writer. My one suggestion would be to add a rule or augment the language rule with a vocabulary rule, or mention that while it's healthy to have some archaic or obscure words here and there, having to look words up every other sentence or using big words for big words sake is distracting and often annoying. I seem to be running into dictionary dictators more and more often in genre fiction and it's not a trend to be emulated or admired.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Great ideas by Donna J Rockwell - 28 March 2017

I have seen/read the basics of these genres. I am not writing in science fiction/fantasy but it also gave useful info on characters, language, space in time, facts of the time period if historical or any genre...mine is historical romance and I got much out of this book. TY

5.0 out of 5 stars - Five Stars by Amazon Customer - 15 February 2017

It's good - I liked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A good, helpful set of ideas by Ray E. Bailey - 23 January 2017

This book provides would be authors with a set of guidelines to help them as they go on their way. The ideas are presented in a very reader friendly way. I recommend it for any fledgling author.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Quick, useful read by Caitlin J - 14 January 2017

Quick and accessible tips for writing genre fiction. I'd have liked it to go a bit more in depth, but I came away wanting to write and with some good ideas about how to do it, and that's what counts.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Not bad tips by nr.amanda74 - 11 January 2017

I got this on a whim because it kept popping up only recommended list. I've really been into the idea of creating a whole fantasy world but haven't had the confidence. This book sort of helped sooth some of my worries. It was well written and wasn't full of fluff.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Excellent for new or inexperienced fiction writers - by Avid Reader TOP 100 REVIEWER - 4 January 2017

I started to read the book because of the sub-title - "creating imaginary worlds", and I expected it to be all about world creation in sci-fi & fantasy. You know, how to create fantasy worlds like Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Whereas in reality it’s all about creating a fictional (i.e. imaginary) story in your head and transporting it into your readers’ heads without them putting the book down early or feeling cheated at the end. But Rule No 1 was “It is not just about the colour of the wallpaper” i.e. a jokey way of saying that Tolkien’s oeuvre isn’t just about Middle Earth. So the content of the book is diametrically opposite to what the sub-title lead me to expect. Two comments:

1) English is a language which allows, and almost encourages, multiple meanings; in fact, much of our comedy is based on it.
2) Before I knew it, I’d finished the book. So no hard feelings about my mistake on what to expect in the book.

Eleven of the twelve rules form a nice introduction to writing fiction, and genre fiction in particular. The twelfth rule then says it’s ok to break the rules sometimes, when you do it on purpose and know what you’re doing. Think of Picasso, who was expert at “ordinary” art before he started doing cubism.

So, it’s a good introduction to genre writing. But it’s also good to use as a checklist, to make sure you’re not going off the rails.

I’m glad I started to read it, and will keep it to hand in my virtual library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Served my Purpose by Sondra Hickson - 24 October 2016

Nice book to refresh yourself with

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good by C.A. Chances - 18 October 2016

The rules presented here can be found in a number of other books on writing. Still, the author presents the rules in a concise and accessible manner. Worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Writing Guide I've Read by Jack Frasier - 12 September 2016

I'm reading a lot about writing right now and no books have been as concise or true in their style as to their words as "writing genre fiction" by Charles Christian. I really felt the information was useful and true as it applies to everything great I've read and have learned about writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read by Beach Blondie - 29 August 2016

Fast, informative kept my attention throughout. Definitely worth the money, one I will refer to again and again! Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good food for thought byAmazon Customer - 25 August 2016

I grabbed this after a quick look at the sample and I am glad I did. From the start it has good points to make and think on. I like the simple bullet points at the end of each chapter they make good reminders. All in all worthwhile to have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple advice explained by Joe - 11 August 2016

This takes a very broad approach to how writers need to think in the art of their craft. While not ground breaking, it does lay things out in simple explanations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good professional overview of how not to write by John Lantern - 23 July 2016

A good professional overview of how not to write, as well as what is good writing. It didn't focus as much as I wanted it to on imaginary worlds but that is probably because I expected too much. Worth keeping.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Creating A Place of One’s Own by Stella Carrier - 7 July 2016

This kindle book caught my attention because of my intent to use the element of world building in my storytelling. Charles Christian touches on areas such as historical elements when writing stories and he cites the 1982 movie Blade Runner. Christian also mentions about writing what you know such as if you’re writing a western andor steampunk. Still this is a worthwhile  purchase especially because he explains in rule 12 why it is also fine to be open to breaking the rules (which I admit resonates with me because I’m sometimes my happiest when I metaphorically color outside the lines, i.e. bending the rules in a harm-free manner from time to time especially as it pertains to my storytelling regardless of whether I’m met with praise or objection).

4.0 out of 5 stars - A No Frills Look
by The Tickling Hippo - 10 April 2016

I was able barrow this book from Amazon, and I was blown away by it! I loved the no frills approach and the ability of the author to speak directly to each potential pitfall and stumbling block of the craft. It was a quick read chocked full of valid reasons why people need to study before assuming just because a person reads, doesn't mean they can write.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Some obvious but necessary rules to make books worth reading - 7 March 2016 by Paul

Essentially a list of twelve rules for writers who want to delve into science fiction, fantasy, and other genres. Some of these fit all fiction writing, while others are more specific.

I enjoyed some of the tidbits, for example finding out that the phrase “suspension of disbelief” was coined by one of my favorite poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The most important point in this book is one I’ve been saying all my reviewing career: it’s fine to have surprise endings, but the author has to subtly signal it in advance—“in effect hidden them in plain sight within the text”—so the readers can think, “I should have seen that coming!”

It’s amazing how often this is overlooked in both print fiction and in TV and movies; far too often we finish a work and wonder why we feel cheated.
Good little piece on things that should be obvious to writers but are sadly not.

4.0 out of 5 stars - have gleaned some good ideas from just scanning - 6 February 2016 by Barbara Nelson

5.0 out of 5 stars - Buy the book and use it for reference throughout the process - 13 January - by Y E Jennings

I've read, re-read and refer to this book quite often. Mr Christian's book is here to stay in my reference collection. I recently had the opportunity to buy it in electronic format and am delighted this concise and insightful reference is now with me wherever I travel. I recommend it to all levels of writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Twelve jewels of advice - 7 January 2016 by Toni Lansing

The book is full of great advice to help not only genre fiction writers but also mainstream writers of all kinds. It is written in easy to understand terminology and I came away with good ideas to use in the book I am writing now. Thanks very much for great information.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Short, but worthwhile - 7 October 2015, by Griswel VINE VOICE

I was skeptical, what can the author say in fifty pages? But I borrowed the book with Kindle Unlimited, read it and bought it. These are mostly valuable reminders, but with explanations for each "rule". Worth rereading.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Useful - 7 October 2015, by Lynette McClenaghan

Charles Christian’s short guide to creating genre fiction is for the most part aimed at inexperienced writers, therefore some of his advice may seem obvious or simplistic. However, there is much in here for more experienced writers who aim to undertake genre fiction or who could use a refresher course in tightening up their writing.

Christian is short and to the point. His 12 rules are more like guidelines than hard and fast rules. He offers them up as straightforward advice in creating worthwhile fiction. He also uses plenty of examples from novels, film and television to illustrate his ideas.

His guide is pertinent to all fiction writing, not just genre fiction and while he does spend some time focusing specifically on genre fiction, it is less about creating imaginary worlds, as the title suggests, than it is about ensuring consistency and credibility. There is little specific advice for, say, science-fiction writers or those who want to write police procedurals, beyond ‘do your research’.

Given the limitations of length, Christian does a good job of broadly covering an important range of elements of writing that must be mastered. His style is crisp and humorous, he is knowledgeable and sensible, and this little monograph is well worth purchasing. It is also worth following him up on his website.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A good rulebook! - 13 September 2015, by John C Mayon

An easy to read reminder of how to keep your imaginary worlds in order--or out of order as the case may be. Well written and concise.

3.0 out of 5 stars - Helpful, concise reminders - 6 September 2015, by The Descenderon

Brand new or aspiring authors will learn new guidelines for what makes for good genre fiction, but the information will be familiar or even obvious to veteran authors, literature students, avid readers, or just amateur writers who have been at it for a while. That's not a bad thing... that said, it is still a helpful collection of advice – a good reminder to not just write books, but write good books.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Solid Advice - 27 August 2015, by Izzi

Simple and solid advice. Really worth reading, it's a quick paced fast fact easy to remember guide! Happy to have read and learnt something!

5.0 out of 5 stars - Reassuring my thoughts - 20 August 2015, by Tyler Harrison

I'm a new author with a novel idea and this book hit home with some of the ideas I had on what to avoid and what to include. The examples were helpful to understand the concepts within each rule.

5.0 out of 5 stars - Rules Made for Braking - 24 June 2015, by Francis Joseph

5.0 out of 5 stars - Conversational - 23 May 2015, by M Jordan

I'm off and running head-first into a new career as a writer. Wish me well, please and thank you. Charlie's little book provided clear direction. I wasn't preached to, I was guided and nicely so. His summaries at the end of each step keeps it simple and direct.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Solid workflow to build genre stories - 22 May 2015, by Donald Wheeler "DnA Works"

Great practical series of steps for writing. Nothing too earthshaking nor cookie-cutter, but simply good solid advice. Recommended for anyone stuck in place writing genre works

5.0 out of 5 stars - Excellent Advice for Writers of All Genres - 28 January 2015, by Orianna (TN, USA)

This book contains some great advice for writers---particularly those who are writing science fiction or fantasy novels, but it isn't limited to just those genres. The tips center around world-building, but it's not quite what you'd expect. It doesn't offer much in the way of, "How to design a planet for colonization," or "How to create an alien race." Instead, it's more broad, generalized advice, which will elevate your writing a few notches. Things like making sure you stick to the rules you've established for your world, making sure all your characters are strong and believable, stuff like that. It isn't all talk, either. There's plenty of examples given, demonstrating what to do, as well as what NOT to do!

I didn't actually learn anything new from this book, but then, I've been writing for years. However, it was nice to see all these tips condensed in one place. So, instead of trawling the internet for hours, finding a few helpful tips here and there, along with all kinds of rotten advice, new writers can simply download this book and benefit immediately. It's the sort of book I wish I'd had ten years ago, when I started working on my first novel.

The price is great and the advice is sound, so it's well worth buying. Even if you aren't writing sci-fi or fantasy, the tips are still valid. I'll give it five stars and recommend it for anyone who's trying to break into the world of fiction writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars - really helpful - 16 January 2015, by Anita Burns

I really liked this little book. It gets straight to the point with good tips and rules that make sense – even the one about breaking the rules. I have been writing a mashup sci fi for too many decades. If I had read this book first, maybe I would not be on my fifth rewrite.

3.0 out of 5 stars - Different from what I expected - 12 January 2015, by Laura Hesketh

5.0 out of 5 stars - "Rules for Writers" 27 November 2014 by Ralph E. Vaughan

This great little book gives aspiring writers a dozen common sense rules for crafting fiction. The intended audience are fantasy and science fiction writers, but the suggestions will benefit writers of any genre. Although the title seems geared towards world building, the book also tackles such fiction mainstays as dialogue, characterization, and plotting. Because the book distills lots of basic and advanced information down to a dozen logically organized rules, supplemented by many examples, it's also well worth the attention of more experienced writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars - "Fast facts for fiction writers" 16 November 2014 by Lucy McCarraher (Author of 'How To Write Fiction Without The Fuss')

Aimed at the beginner genre fiction writer, this concise manual nails the main mistakes made by amateur authors. Believable characters; consistency of setting, speech, time and place; and not cheating the reader are rules that all novelists - even the literary types that the author takes a few digs at - should read, mark, learn and inwardly digest. A quick and witty read (some great examples are given), this book is well worth returning to at greater length to savour the author's knowledge and analysis of a wide range of fiction and the spin-off films. A short book that packs a punch, Creating Imaginary Worlds is a neat summary of some basic fiction-writing rules.

5.0 out of 5 stars - "Great Advice" 16 November 2014 by S. Pilmore

5.0 out of 5 stars - "INSIGHTFUL, CONCISE. AND A VALUABLE GUIDE FOR ALL WRITERS!" 12 November 2014, by Geraldine Ahearn (Author Geri Ahearn) Top 500 Reviewer, Vine Voice

This interesting book for writers was gifted to me three weeks ago, from a close friend, who knows that I collect writing books for my personal library. As a published author of 6 books, I found this reference valuable for both new, and established writers. The author offers examples, and important information on not just science fiction or paranormal, but all genres. The more you read this book, the more enjoyable you find it, while taking notes. For only 99 Cents, the information obtained is well-worth every penny. The 12 Rules given help improve writing skills, teaches you how-to-create an exciting world, and how-to draw the reader's attention.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Not what I expected but that's not a bad thing... 27 October 2014 by Horror Author Shaun Hupp

This was a nice read. As a published author, it didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know. There were some helpful hints that I did bookmark and I plan to come back to at a later date. Overall, it was good. It just wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting a "world building book" that focussed on settings and details. This book deals more with heroes and villains, dialog and plot. I would still recommend it to new and old authors alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars - The 12 rules are great guidelines that every fiction writer needs to know... 15 October 2014 by Horatio Gavins "Voracious Reader"

4.0 out of 5 stars - Good writers guide... 9 October 2014 by Kindle Customer

Level of detail is good. Not too wordy. Well organized. Serves new and experienced writers with check-back reference reminders during drafts and editing activities. Today's writers often combine genres, so hard boundaries are difficult to define. Useful addition to my reference collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Good Read... 6 October 2014 by Joel Wood

A good book, helps gives pointers to hopeful novelists. The end was a little contradictory, but some useful tips. Hopefully this helps me in developing my story.

5.0 out of 5 stars - A Great Teaching Tool... 7 September 2014 by Dennis Waller (Top 500 Reviewer)

As a writer, I found this book to be extremely helpful and insightful in improving my skills. the 12 rules cover aspects that will help shed light on the different facets of writing making for a more rounded story that should be as captivating as realistic. I liked the examples provided in illustrating the points. Another interesting thing about this book is it is geared towards all genres. The principles taught apply to writing, regardless of genre, that is a big plus.

Overall, this is one of those books that I'll be coming back to when I feel like I need a little guidance. An excellent book that offers quality content that should be beneficial to any writer, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars - If I ever write a book... 2 September 2014 by BexsterBoo "Littlegem"

This is the book that I will keep referring to if I ever get around to writing one, it is concise and informative, a useful tool particularly for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Amusing and enlightening... 28 August 2014 by PabloJ

With this book, CC has pretty much nailed what to do and not to do. Reading the rules you might, like myself, think that some points are blatantly obvious. But to be honest, that's really his point. With much of this a writer could say "well yes I know that", but look at their work and they have missed obvious failings. The book is quite short but that's ok. It gets the points across without labouring the issues. With this book, CC has pretty much nailed what to do and not to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Everything you need to know, pocket-sized... 25 August 2014 by Wendy

Well okay - not literally pocket-sized if you're reading this on an e-reader, but suffice to say it's the ideal go-to source for the basic rules and principles of genre fiction writing. The whole book can be read in about about half an hour, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable read and easy to dip into in the future for recaps. Best of all, it's solid, practical advice. I'd love it to have been longer and to have gone into more depth, and that's the only reason I didn't give this book a 5 rating.
