I'm a published author with more than 30 nonfiction books on amazon. In between writing these books I have started several fiction titles but finished none of them. The problem? I don't know what I'm doing!
Nonfiction writing has a basis in published works, ancient and modern, plus the internet with Wikipedia, Google searches, and online Bible commentaries with biblehub.com to check facts. But fiction is all from the imagination!

I quickly learned that I knew nothing about building characters (they are all wooden pegs or cardboard cutouts) and I would write with no thought of a plot, back story or curve. Your book gave me a quick, easily digested set of rules to follow and hopefully, write something worth reading. Thanks for giving this newbie a simple path to follow.

A good,concise, no nonsense book offering tried and tested rules of fiction writing. The title was slightly misleading as I assumed this to be a book about only setting, but in actual fact it goes into depth on plot, characterisation, staying authentic to your story and much more. I would definitely recommend this book to the novice and enduring creative writer alike.

With a title like "creating imaginary worlds" one would expect the book to cover information about planetary or at least worldview creation. There was nothing of that sort to be found. Instead this is a great set of does and don'ts for writing genre fiction. I did find it helpful in knowing what some of the problems that have been hinted at over the last few years have been. The points made are necessary, and well-thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any writer. That said, I do wish they'd change the title to focus more on what the book is about. All in all one of the good books for those who want to improve their craft.

While not a 'How To Build a World in Detail' book, it is a good troubleshooter so you can make sure the work you invest gets good returns. The tips on how world building and delivery method can impact reader engagement are very helpful. 

Well worth reading, even if not writing in the speculative fiction genres.

That's 10 cents per rule. Bargain! You can't find advice that cheap elsewhere, unless one of your parents or friends is an actual writer and are willing to part with decent advice for free.

If you're expecting a how-to guide, look elsewhere. But for some good tips this is quite good for the price.

As a fan fiction writer I am always trying to offer my readers a more polished and professional finished piece but every single book on the subject of writing is the same. There are numerous chapters telling you what you must of must not do before the final chapter says there are no rules.

This is no different but if you learn better with a less formal approach, this is a good piece that focuses on honing your creative processes instead of getting into the rigid mechanics of writing itself.

The advice given is good and sound; almost like stating the obvious! But the obvious is so often only easily recognized in retrospect - Rear view mirrors and all that.

As a writer I am always looking for ways to improve the craft. Normally, craft books are dry, boring lectures that do more to piss me off than to inspire my writing. This book is different. In a nutshell, this book is great advice wrapped in funny sarcasm, tied with helpful insights. I experienced many “Yeah, I do that” moments and also “Oh no! I do that” moments. A quick read. Well worth it.

I enjoyed reading this book and found it a helpful reminder to keep on task as a writer. My one suggestion would be to add a rule or augment the language rule with a vocabulary rule, or mention that while it's healthy to have some archaic or obscure words here and there, having to look words up every other sentence or using big words for big words sake is distracting and often annoying. I seem to be running into dictionary dictators more and more often in genre fiction and it's not a trend to be emulated or admired.

I started to read the book because of the sub-title - "creating imaginary worlds", and I expected it to be all about world creation in sci-fi & fantasy. You know, how to create fantasy worlds like Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Whereas in reality it’s all about creating a fictional (i.e. imaginary) story in your head and transporting it into your readers’ heads without them putting the book down early or feeling cheated at the end. But Rule No 1 was “It is not just about the colour of the wallpaper” i.e. a jokey way of saying that Tolkien’s oeuvre isn’t just about Middle Earth. So the content of the book is diametrically opposite to what the sub-title lead me to expect. Two comments:

1) English is a language which allows, and almost encourages, multiple meanings; in fact, much of our comedy is based on it.
2) Before I knew it, I’d finished the book. So no hard feelings about my mistake on what to expect in the book.

Eleven of the twelve rules form a nice introduction to writing fiction, and genre fiction in particular. The twelfth rule then says it’s ok to break the rules sometimes, when you do it on purpose and know what you’re doing. Think of Picasso, who was expert at “ordinary” art before he started doing cubism.

So, it’s a good introduction to genre writing. But it’s also good to use as a checklist, to make sure you’re not going off the rails.

I’m glad I started to read it, and will keep it to hand in my virtual library.

This kindle book caught my attention because of my intent to use the element of world building in my storytelling. Charles Christian touches on areas such as historical elements when writing stories and he cites the 1982 movie Blade Runner. Christian also mentions about writing what you know such as if you’re writing a western andor steampunk. Still this is a worthwhile  purchase especially because he explains in rule 12 why it is also fine to be open to breaking the rules (which I admit resonates with me because I’m sometimes my happiest when I metaphorically color outside the lines, i.e. bending the rules in a harm-free manner from time to time especially as it pertains to my storytelling regardless of whether I’m met with praise or objection).

I was able barrow this book from Amazon, and I was blown away by it! I loved the no frills approach and the ability of the author to speak directly to each potential pitfall and stumbling block of the craft. Essentially a list of twelve rules for writers who want to delve into science fiction, fantasy, and other genres. Some of these fit all fiction writing, while others are more specific.

I enjoyed some of the tidbits, for example finding out that the phrase “suspension of disbelief” was coined by one of my favorite poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The most important point in this book is one I’ve been saying all my reviewing career: it’s fine to have surprise endings, but the author has to subtly signal it in advance—“in effect hidden them in plain sight within the text”—so the readers can think, “I should have seen that coming!”

​It’s amazing how often this is overlooked in both print fiction and in TV and movies; far too often we finish a work and wonder why we feel cheated.
Good little piece on things that should be obvious to writers but are sadly not.

Charles Christian’s short guide to creating genre fiction is for the most part aimed at inexperienced writers, therefore some of his advice may seem obvious or simplistic. However, there is much in here for more experienced writers who aim to undertake genre fiction or who could use a refresher course in tightening up their writing.

Christian is short and to the point. His 12 rules are more like guidelines than hard and fast rules. He offers them up as straightforward advice in creating worthwhile fiction. He also uses plenty of examples from novels, film and television to illustrate his ideas.

His guide is pertinent to all fiction writing, not just genre fiction and while he does spend some time focusing specifically on genre fiction, it is less about creating imaginary worlds, as the title suggests, than it is about ensuring consistency and credibility. There is little specific advice for, say, science-fiction writers or those who want to write police procedurals, beyond ‘do your research’.

Given the limitations of length, Christian does a good job of broadly covering an important range of elements of writing that must be mastered. His style is crisp and humorous, he is knowledgeable and sensible, and this little monograph is well worth purchasing. It is also worth following him up on his website.

This book contains some great advice for writers---particularly those who are writing science fiction or fantasy novels, but it isn't limited to just those genres. The tips center around world-building, but it's not quite what you'd expect. It doesn't offer much in the way of, "How to design a planet for colonization," or "How to create an alien race." Instead, it's more broad, generalized advice, which will elevate your writing a few notches. Things like making sure you stick to the rules you've established for your world, making sure all your characters are strong and believable, stuff like that. It isn't all talk, either. There's plenty of examples given, demonstrating what to do, as well as what NOT to do!

I didn't actually learn anything new from this book, but then, I've been writing for years. However, it was nice to see all these tips condensed in one place. So, instead of trawling the internet for hours, finding a few helpful tips here and there, along with all kinds of rotten advice, new writers can simply download this book and benefit immediately. It's the sort of book I wish I'd had ten years ago, when I started working on my first novel.

The price is great and the advice is sound, so it's well worth buying. Even if you aren't writing sci-fi or fantasy, the tips are still valid. I'll give it five stars and recommend it for anyone who's trying to break into the world of fiction writing.

I really liked this little book. It gets straight to the point with good tips and rules that make sense – even the one about breaking the rules. I have been writing a mashup sci fi for too many decades. If I had read this book first, maybe I would not be on my fifth rewrite.

The intended audience are fantasy and science fiction writers, but the suggestions will benefit writers of any genre. Although the title seems geared towards world building, the book also tackles such fiction mainstays as dialogue, characterization, and plotting. Because the book distills lots of basic and advanced information down to a dozen logically organized rules, supplemented by many examples, it's also well worth the attention of more experienced writers.

This was a nice read. As a published author, it didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know. There were some helpful hints that I did bookmark and I plan to come back to at a later date. Overall, it was good. It just wasn't what I was expecting. I was expecting a "world building book" that focussed on settings and details. This book deals more with heroes and villains, dialog and plot. I would still recommend it to new and old authors alike.

As a writer, I found this book to be extremely helpful and insightful in improving my skills. the 12 rules cover aspects that will help shed light on the different facets of writing making for a more rounded story that should be as captivating as realistic. I liked the examples provided in illustrating the points. Another interesting thing about this book is it is geared towards all genres. The principles taught apply to writing, regardless of genre, that is a big plus.

Overall, this is one of those books that I'll be coming back to when I feel like I need a little guidance. An excellent book that offers quality content that should be beneficial to any writer, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned writer.

With this book, CC has pretty much nailed what to do and not to do. Reading the rules you might, like myself, think that some points are blatantly obvious. But to be honest, that's really his point. With much of this a writer could say "well yes I know that", but look at their work and they have missed obvious failings. The book is quite short but that's ok. It gets the points across without labouring the issues. With this book, CC has pretty much nailed what to do and not to do.

Well okay - not literally pocket-sized if you're reading this on an e-reader, but suffice to say it's the ideal go-to source for the basic rules and principles of genre fiction writing. The whole book can be read in about about half an hour, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable read and easy to dip into in the future for recaps. Best of all, it's solid, practical advice. I'd love it to have been longer and to have gone into more depth, and that's the only reason I didn't give this book a 5 rating.
